The average wholesale prices of most staple foods, fruit, and vegetables in Bulgaria rose during the week starting on February 9, the State Commission for Commodity Exchanges and Wholesale Markets reported on Saturday. The food wholesale market index increased by 0.88% to 2.519 points.
The base level of the index (1.000 points) was established in 2005.
Among vegetables, the largest price increases were recorded for green peppers, by 15.10% to EUR 2.76 per kilogram, followed by potatoes, which appreciated by 10.67% to trade at EUR 0.56/kg. The wholesale price of courgettes went up by 8.87% to EUR 2.65/kg, of red peppers by 7.38% to EUR 2.62/kg, of tomatoes by 4.21% to EUR 1.98/kg, of cucumbers by 4.92% to EUR 2.56/kg, of carrots by 2.65% to EUR 0.62/kg, and of onions by 1.35% to EUR 0.45/kg. A price drop was observed only in cabbage, by 1.23% to EUR 0.48/kg.
Among fruit, the biggest increase was observed in the price of lemons, by 12.43% to EUR 1.90/kg. Tangerines appreciated by 0.60% and traded at EUR 1.35/kg, oranges by 9.19% to reach EUR 1.26/kg, and apples by 8.13% to EUR 1.17/kg. Only bananas depreciated, by 1.86% to trade at EUR 1.48/kg.
The average wholesale price of white brined cheese from cow's milk went down by 0.23% to EUR 6.20/kg, while Vitosha-type yellow kashkaval cheese appreciated by 0.25% to EUR 9.67/kg. Yogurt (3% and higher fat content) became more expensive by 2.10% and traded at EUR 0.68 per 400 g, and fresh milk appreciated by 0.16% to EUR 1.23 per litre. The price of butter (125 g pack) also grew, by 6.53% to EUR 1.73 per pack.
Frozen poultry appreciated by 0.39% to EUR 3.58 per kilogramme, while medium-sized eggs depreciated by 1.87% to EUR 0.21 each.
The wholesale price of rice went up by 1.58% to EUR 1.67/kg, of lentils by 0.86% to EUR 2.11/kg, and of beans by 0.65% to EUR 2.16/kg. Type 500 wheat flour went down by 7.45% to EUR 0.77/kg. Sunflower oil appreciated by 1.18% to EUR 1.71 per litre and so did sugar, by 1.55% to EUR 0.92 per kilogramme.
