The northern part of Kabakum Beach near Varna has been fully cleaned following an inspection for oil pollution, according to the Environment and Water Ministry's website. The pollution resulted from an accident in the boiler room of the Specialized Rehabilitation Hospital. The hospital’s management acted immediately, and cleanup efforts began during the inspection.
The sandy stretch of the beach has now been completely cleared. The municipality of Varna is set to remove oil residues from the closed section of the concrete pipeline for surface and rainwater runoff.
The pollution was first reported to the Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Water in Varna on January 31, the Ministry added. Experts from the Inspectorate, the Black Sea Basin Directorate, Varna Municipality, and the Interior Ministry conducted an immediate on-site inspection.
On Saturday, the Regional Administration in Varna reported that a used petroleum product, most likely heavy fuel oil, had been detected in the northern part of Kabakum Beach. The alert was issued by a local resident.
