The Commission for Protection against Discrimination (CPD) marked the 20th anniversary of its establishment with an official ceremony attended by senior state officials, institutional representatives, and public figures, highlighting the Commission’s role in protecting human rights, promoting equal treatment, and fostering an accessible environment.
Opening the event, CPD Chair Elka Bozhova described the institution as an example among equality bodies due to its broad powers in human rights protection. She said the Commission has reached institutional maturity over the past two decades and has contributed to restoring justice in numerous cases, including improving accessibility for people with disabilities. Bozhova also called for legislative amendments to further strengthen the Commission’s work, particularly regarding functional immunity under the Protection against Discrimination Act.
As part of the anniversary ceremony, the CPD presented awards recognizing efforts to build an accessible environment. The Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) was honoured for improving accessibility at its headquarters and supporting the Accessible Bulgaria campaign. BTA Director General Kiril Valchev noted that the installation of an elevator and access platforms has made the agency’s central building accessible, while efforts continue to improve access across its nationwide network of press clubs. Awards were also presented to the Ivan Vazov National Theatre and the Burgas Municipality for their contributions to accessibility.
In her congratulatory address, National Assembly Chair Raya Nazaryan said the Commission has established in society the understanding that discrimination is unacceptable and has no place in a democratic state governed by the rule of law. She described the CPD as a symbol of the protection of citizens’ rights and emphasized its contribution to promoting equal opportunities and equal treatment in Bulgaria, as well as its growing experience and international recognition.
In a message marking the anniversary, President Iliana Iotova said the Commission has demonstrated that equal treatment is a cause that requires sustained efforts and joint initiatives. She highlighted the CPD’s role in protecting citizens, promoting inclusion, countering hate speech, and upholding European democratic values, and expressed appreciation for the work of its current and former members.
