About BGN 500 million have been spent so far on the development of the project for new units at the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), said Petyo Ivanov, Executive Director of Kozloduy NPP - New Builds EAD, told journalists on Monday. He was presenting the current status of the project, the progress achieved so far, the key stages of the upcoming schedule, and the development of the negotiation process. According to him, the costs this year will again be around BGN 500 million.

The cost of the project is a dynamic thing, not only in terms of the construction price, but also in terms of what is included in the price and whether all risks have been assessed, he explained. The main goal this year is to have a clear idea of the total cost of the project, he added, but declined to commit to a forecast for the amount. According to him, the final investment decision should be made at the end of this year or in 2027.

Ivanov also said that the contract for preliminary engineering activities with Westinghouse Electric Company will need to be extended for a period of between 12 and 14 months.

The first nuclear concrete for Unit 7 of the Kozloduy NPP is expected to be poured by 2030, said Nikolay Miladinov, Director of the Project Management Directorate. He also pointed out that within a few weeks, a notification will be submitted to the European Commission for permission to grant state aid for the project.

Alex Nestor, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Kozloduy NPP - New Builds EAD, noted that this is not only the largest infrastructure project in the country, but also a very complex one. This is a high-tech nuclear project, he added.
