The Bulgarian community in Zagreb participated in the Days of National Minorities held in the Croatian capital on September 28. The event took place in the central Zrinjevac Park and featured stands showcasing minority language education, organized by the Coordination of Councils and Representatives of National Minorities of the City of Zagreb under the patronage of Mayor Tomislav Tomasevic.

The programme presented educational activities and cultural performances by the Bulgarian, Bosniak, Macedonian, Hungarian and Czech minorities. The aim was to highlight to the citizens of Zagreb the wealth of languages and traditions preserved through minority education, as well as the importance of maintaining identity and fostering mutual understanding in society.

The director of the Bulgarian Sunday School Ivan Vazov in Zagreb, Iglika Kasabova, together with teacher Ralitsa Taton and students from 5th to 8th grade, presented Bulgarian language education. Classes are held with the support of the Bulgarian Ministry of Education and take place at the Ivan Gundulić Primary School, attended by 35 students.

“We prepared a presentation of the Bulgarian alphabet and the differences between Cyrillic and Latin scripts. Visitors to our stand also saw the book Wonderful Kingdom, a collection of Bulgarian fairy tales translated into Croatian back in 1938. We will do our best to make sure today’s Croatian children can also read beautiful Bulgarian fairy tales in Croatian translation,” Kasabova said.

The event was also attended by the Ambassador of the Republic of Bulgaria to Croatia, Iva Kruleva.
