President of the Bulgarian Rhythmic Gymnastics Federation Iliana Raeva said on Sunday that she is closely following the World Championships in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, as the sport has become radically different and more competitive, with Bulgaria maintaining its position among the elite.
In a message on social media, Raeva celebrated Bulgaria’s team silver at the World Championships, describing the Olympic Arena in Rio as transformed by passionate crowds and setting the stage for what she believes was one of the most exciting finals in rhythmic gymnastics history.
Raeva reflected on the sport’s rapid development, observing that rhythmic gymnastics has dramatically broadened its global reach, welcoming newcomers from all continents while established nations fiercely contest the top ranks. She noted greater competition for medals, an expanding field of finalists, and predicted that the influx of exceptional young women next year will further intensify qualifications for the Olympic Games.
Looking ahead to the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, Raeva believes Bulgaria remains among the strongest powers in rhythmic gymnastics thanks to its unique identity and sustained medal-winning tradition, even as new challengers emerge every year. She expressed confidence that Bulgarian athletes will stay focused on reaching the top.
Raeva also welcomed recent rules reforms, saying that returning the emphasis to artistry and execution, along with removing damaging contortion elements, has made the sport healthier and fairer. She highlighted advancements in judging, including digital scoring, and praised the ongoing work of International Gymnastics Federation President Morinari Watanabe and Rhythmic Gymnastics Technical Committee President Noha Abou Shabana.
Concluding, Raeva called for dedication from Bulgarian gymnasts and wise decisions for the sport’s continued growth, convinced that both the path and direction remain right for future success.
