Botev’s ideas are the political criterium for social justice, humanity and progressiveness, the parliamentary group of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) – United Left wrote in a declaration on the occasion of the Day of Botev and Those Fallen for the Freedom and Independence of Bulgaria, June 2, the press office of the political party announced Monday.

"Botev’s verse "He, who falls in fight for freedom, lives forevermore," has been engraved on dozens of monuments around our motherland. It has turned into the people’s belief of the immortality of the fighters for national freedom, just as Hristo Botev has become a symbol of our national revolution. There is hardly a Bulgarian who does not know this verse and does not believe in it," BSP-United Left said.

"Hristo Botev is not a professional revolutionary, rebel or chieftain. He is a poet, publisher and teacher, a revolutionary in spirit," the BSP-United Left added, noting that at the same time Botev dedicated all his activities to the revolutionary growth of the nation and Bulgarian emigration. "In his understanding of the revolution, Hristo Botev does not differ in any way from his most notable contemporaries - Garibaldi, Mazzini, Kossuth," the declaration said.

The parliamentary group noted that the need to turn back to history is growing, because it is a standard for what we do today. “More than ever, we need personalities and ideas that have stood the test of time, have gone beyond the borders of our state, and have become a symbol of the national spirit” the BSP-United Left declaration said.

Bulgaria commemorates its national heroes on June 2. Sirens sound across the country for two minutes at noon to mark the Day of Botev and Those Fallen for the Freedom and the Independence of Bulgaria. Pedestrians and drivers are asked to stop right where they are and stand still for the duration of the siren signal, the Interior Ministry said in a press release.
