On February 21, 1999, Ljubco Georgievski, Prime Minister of the Republic of North Macedonia (then-Republic of Macedonia), arrived in Bulgaria for a two-day official visit. The visit marked the first trip to Bulgaria by a Macedonian prime minister since the country declared its independence in 1991.

During the visit, the two sides signed seven bilateral agreements covering the avoidance of double taxation, trade cooperation, international road transport of passengers and goods, air services, the promotion and reciprocal protection of investments, Convention on Consular Relations, and a protocol on cooperation between the foreign ministries of both countries.
