Bulgarian National Assembly Chair Rosen Zhelyazkov and a parliamentary delegation he heads laid a wreath at the bust of Kapitan Petko Voyvoda in Rome on Tuesday. That was the start of their two-day visit to Italy and the Vatican on the occasion of May 24, the Day of the Bulgarian Alphabet, Education and Culture, and of Slav Letters.
In early 1866 Kapitan Petko Voyvoda visited Italy to meet with Giuseppe Garibaldi. The two organized a Garibaldian detachment of 220 Italians and 67 Bulgarians that took part in the 1866-1869 Cretan Revolt of Greeks against Ottoman domination.
