Caretaker Minister of Tourism Irena Georgieva pledged to keep working closely with municipalities and the tourism industry at a handover ceremony at the Ministry of Tourism in Sofia on Thursday.
She said her team would build on the progress made and strengthen Bulgaria’s position as a year-round tourism destination, and she praised her predecessor, Miroslav Borshosh, for stabilizing the sector and maintaining active dialogue with stakeholders.
“I take on this responsibility with a clear understanding of tourism’s importance to the country’s economy. We will build on what has been achieved and work to establish Bulgaria as a year-round tourism destination,” Georgieva said.
Georgieva gave a highly positive assessment of the ministry’s work under Borshosh, citing clear progress in the sector’s development, the stability achieved, active dialogue with industry and municipalities, and a coherent strategic vision that has laid solid foundations for long-term growth and a stronger international positioning of Bulgaria as a tourism destination.
During their talks, the two said that policy continuity and effective coordination with all stakeholders are essential for the stable and sustainable development of Bulgarian tourism.
Georgieva was nominated as caretaker Minister of Tourism in the Gurov caretaker government. She graduated in sociology from Sofia University St Kliment Ohridski, earning a gold medal for academic excellence and active public engagement, the Ministry of Tourism said. Most of her professional career has been in tourism. She has nearly 25 years of management experience in the sector, including as head of travel agencies. She has also obtained a number of professional certificates in the field.
