Bulgarian Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev has welcomed US President Donald Trump’s firm commitment to ending military hostilities in Ukraine and achieving peace through negotiations. He stressed the need for any peace agreement to be both sustainable and just, rooted in international law and a rules-based international order, the Foreign Ministry reported on Monday, covering Georgiev’s participation in an informal videoconference of the EU Foreign Affairs Council.

"Until that is achieved, our comprehensive support for Ukraine will continue. Peace is not simply the absence of war; it must serve as the foundation for long-term stability, security, and prosperity—both for Ukraine and for Europe as a whole," Georgiev stated.

The meeting focused on the latest developments in diplomatic efforts to end Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, coordination with transatlantic partners ahead of the upcoming US–Russia presidential summit in Alaska, and the continuation of EU solidarity and comprehensive support for Ukraine, the Foreign Ministry added.

Georgiev said the sanctions imposed on Russia are proving effective. He called for further strengthening of these measures until Russian military aggression against Ukraine is brought to an end.

US President Donald Trump said on Monday that Kyiv and Moscow will both have to cede land to end the war in Ukraine, Reuters reported. Trump said talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin this week will instantly show whether the Kremlin leader is willing to make a deal. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy warned that any concessions to Russia would not persuade it to stop fighting, Reuters said.

The EU Foreign Affairs Council also discussed the current situation in the Middle East and the urgent need to accelerate the delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians in the Gaza Strip.

Georgiev expressed Bulgaria’s deep concern over the expansion of military operations in Gaza. “We call for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages held by Hamas in inhumane conditions, which would enable the continuation of ceasefire efforts. Humanitarian aid for the residents of Gaza, who are in critical condition, must be increased without delay,” he added.

The Foreign Minister reaffirmed Bulgaria’s readiness, together with its EU partners, to continue intensive and targeted efforts toward a lasting resolution of the Middle East conflict based on the two-state solution principle.
