Bulgarian Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov congratulated Friedrich Merz on his election as Chancellor of Germany on Tuesday.

In a message, Zhelyazkov underscored the strategic importance of Bulgaria’s cooperation with Germany at a bilateral level and within the EU, NATO and international organizations. He highlighted the two countries’ deep historical bond, common values, mutual respect and shared vision for a united, stable and thriving Europe.

“Through enhanced cooperation and coordination of the efforts at all levels, we will continue to work actively to strengthen resilience, unity and prosperity on the European continent,” the Prime Minister said.

He called for closer and more consistent engagement in finding sustainable solutions to global challenges. He believes that unity, solidarity and joint actions in the EU are the most viable response to the pressing issues of our time. “Through concerted efforts, we can contribute substantially to promoting peace, security and shared democratic values,” Zhelyazkov said.

Earlier on Tuesday, conservative leader Friedrich Merz won a Bundestag vote to become Germany's next chancellor at the second attempt.
