Over 140 cyclists will participate in the Danube Ultra cycling tour, which will start in late August in Vidin, organizer Boris Begamov told BTA on Friday.
He stated that there are registered participants from Bulgaria, Romania, UK, Luxembourg, Italy, Ukraine, and Russia. "The event is not a competition. All participants start together. There will be cyclists who will cover the distance (to Durankulak) in less than 30 hours. But a large part of the participants will finish within 5 to 7 days," Begamov specified.
The route is over 700-kilometre long and passes through over 110 settlements. Begamov noted that there will be stops and refreshment points in Lom, Kozloduy and Oryahovo, adding that the Danube Ultra partners with twelve municipalities. “There are places where we sleep, municipalities organize receptions, tents, there are people who await the cyclists", he said.
Begamov underscored that the main goal is to popularize the tourist summer cycling route along the Danube River, and recalled that the initiative started in 2014 with him and two other enthusiasts, with over 1,000 certificates handed out to participants in the editions held so far. "The most important thing is that local communities realize how useful the project is, as through it, entire settlements and municipalities are promoted and it indirectly contributes to local business,” Begamov noted.
