Three finals were won by Bulgarian athletes on the first day of the FIG World Challenge Cup finals in artistic gymnastics here on Saturday. Eddie Penev became the champion on the floor exercise, his brother Kevin Penev came second, and Valentina Georgieva became the European vice-champion on the vault.
Bulgaria had a total of six finalists on Saturday.
Eddie Penev won the gold with a score of 13.900 points. For him, this is the second gold from Varna after 2023 on this apparatus.
Kevin Penev took the silver with 13.600 points.
In the women's vault final, Bulgaria's best athlete Valentina Georgieva placed second and failed to duplicate her gold from last year. She received a score of 13.299 points after performing her first vault perfectly, but in her second attempt she went down due to abdominal pain.
Bulgarian Gymnastics Federation President Krasimir Dunev said she had been complaining of abdominal pain for several days. It is probably appendicitis, he noted. Georgieva left for Sofia where she will be examined and, if necessary, undergo surgery.
