The government Friday approved an amendment to the Research, Innovation, and Digitalisation for Smart Transformation Programme 2021-2027. Following a second round of the programme's mid-term review, two new measures have been added to support the modernization of scientific capacity and dual-use innovations, the government information service said.

The programme introduces a new procedure, Modernization of National Laser Research Capacity, aimed at creating and testing a prototype for clean energy through laser nuclear fusion, which has the potential for a world-class scientific breakthrough.

A new priority is being established to support dual-use innovations and technologies in Bulgaria. The goal is to develop the country's technological and industrial capacity through investments that simultaneously strengthen defence capabilities and civil security. Research, development and innovation activities will be supported, as well as the creation of strategic infrastructure which promotes the development and deployment of cutting-edge solutions for national security, the defence industry and the civilian sector.

The government approved an amendment to the Competitiveness and Innovation in Enterprises Programme, which will increase investments by Bulgarian companies in strategic technologies such as artificial intelligence and cybersecurity.

Support will also be provided for the development and production of deep and quantum technologies, robotics and autonomous systems, renewable energy technologies, cell and tissue cultures and engineering, and other areas covered by the Strategic Technologies for Europe Platform (STEP).

The Competitiveness Programme allocates funds aimed at strengthening defence capabilities. These funds will encourage production investments in defence companies and in the manufacture of dual-use products.
