The Industrial Production Index decreased by 6.6% in May 2025, year-on-year, according to preliminary and seasonally adjusted data released by the National Statistical Institute on Thursday. This marks the sixth consecutive month of annual decline in the calendar-adjusted industrial production index. Over the past 25 months, the index has recorded year-on-year decreases in 23 of them.
On a month-on-month basis, the industrial production index rose by 0.5%.
Annual changes
On an annual basis, industrial production saw declines in electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply (by 26.6%) and manufacturing (by 2.0%), while an increase of 8.4% was registered in the mining and quarrying industry.
Within manufacturing, basic metals went down by 36.5%, textiles by 25.4%, and paper and paper products by 23.9%.
Production increased by 47.4% in tobacco products and by 24.0% in other non-metallic mineral products.
Monthly changes
Compared to April 2025, May saw increases in manufacturing (by 1.7%) and mining and quarrying (by 0.4%). Production in the electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply sector declined by 8.0%.
Within manufacturing, the most significant monthly increases were in other non-metallic mineral products (by 11.6%) and chemicals and chemical products (by 6.4%).
Declines were reported in tobacco products (by 11.8%) and textiles (by 11.3%).
The Monthly Industrial Production Index measures changes in production values of industrial enterprises. This information can be used in tracing the current economic development and making short-term forecasts.
Indices do not measure the actual production level. They aim to measure the average change in the value of production between two points in time. Indices are compiled based on information collected through a representative sampling survey on industrial enterprises. The sample covers enterprises with an annual turnover of more than 97% of the total turnover in the industry.
