The budget of Operational Programme (OP) Transport and Transport Infrastructure is BGN 4 billion, of which just over BGN 1 billion should be absorbed by the end of 2023, Minister of Transport and Communications Georgi Gvozdeikov said at an information event dedicated to the OP here on Wednesday. In his words, that is a huge resource but with good mobilisation of the Transport Ministry and the beneficiaries, the OP will conclude successfully.

"Just days ago, we included for funding three new projects worth over BGN 184 million. This resource is unabsorbed resources from the railway projects with significantly delayed implementation," the Minister explained. The investments will be for development of the Sofia underground railway system and new trains, for building Burgas' ring road and for increasing the dept of Burgas Port, he specified.

Gvozdeikov said that BGN 70 million of the OP's budget are directed at its most successful project - the capital's underground railway system - to partially fund Line 3's expansion and purchase 16 new trains. Thus, BGN 883 million in total have been allocated to the project under OP Transport and Transport Infrastructure in the 2014-2020 programming period.

A contractor has already been selected for the project to deepen the navigation path of the Burgas-West port terminal, and the contract  should be signed within days, the Minister went on to say. It is worth nearly BGN 70 million, of which more than BGN 24 million will come from the OP. The project's implementation, which should take 204 days, will allow the processing of some of the biggest ships in the world, thus increasing the port's potential significantly.

Burgas' ring road connecting Trakia motorway and the Burgas-Varna main road will be funded with BGN 90 million under the OP. The project has already been implemented, significantly reducing the traffic in the city by rerouting the transit traffic from Trakia motorway outside of Burgas and saving the transiting passengers 350,000 hours a year on average, it transpired during Wednesday's information event.
