Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) MP Petar Chobanov was elected as the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) Deputy Governor heading the Banking Department, while Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria (CC-DB) MP Andrey Gyurov was elected as the BNB Deputy Governor heading the Issuance Department on Wednesday.

The decisions were taken without debate in plenary.

After the National Assembly decided on July 18 that BNB Governor Dimitar Radev should stay in office, the next day he nominated Gyurov and Chobanov as BNB deputy governors.

148 MPs voted in favour of Chobanov's nomination (61 from GERB-UDF; 56 from CC-DB and 31 from MRF), 46 against (37 from Vazrazhdane and 9 from There Is Such a People), while 15 abstained (from BSP for Bulgaria).

Gyurov's nomination was also supported by 148 people (61 from GERB-UDF; 56 from CC-DB and 31 from MRF), 45 were against it (37 from Vazrazhdane and 9 from There Is Such a People), while 17 MPs abstained (from BSP for Bulgaria).

"I voted against and I will remind you of two things because you elected these deputy governors purely politically anyway,” said There Is Such a People floor leader Toshko Yordanov. “”Mr Gyurov from the CC-DB - their coalition partners themselves know that his capacity is not adequate for the position he holds. And about the other deputy governor - do you remember the Corporate Commercial Bank? Do you remember BGN 6 billion went down, and do you remember who was finance minister then? Congratulations, colleagues," he added.

After their election, the two new BNB deputy governors took an oath before the National Assembly. Parliament also terminated their MP powers.
