Bulgaria's gross external debt amounted to EUR 53,557.4 million at end-October 2025, up by EUR 4,992.5 million (10.3%) from a year earlier, according to preliminary data of the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB). The gross external debt was 47.7% of GDP, compared with 46.4% at end-October 2024.
Short-term liabilities totalled EUR 8,159.3 million (15.2% of the total debt, 7.3% of GDP), down by EUR 320.6 million (3.8%) from end-October 2024 (EUR 8,479.9 million, 17.5% of the total debt, 8.1% of GDP).
Long-term liabilities totalled EUR 45,398.1 million (84.8% of the total debt, 40.4% of GDP) at end-October 2025, up by EUR 5,313.1 million (13.3%) from end-October 2024 (EUR 40,085 million, 82.5% of the total debt, 38.3% of GDP).
Gross external liabilities with remaining maturity over one year totalled EUR 36,217.3 million (67.6%) at end-October 2025
At end-October 2025, 80% of gross external liabilities were denominated in euro, compared with 77.1% at end-October 2024.
General government's gross external debt totalled EUR 17,631.3 million (15.7% of GDP) at end-October 2025, up by EUR 4,535 million (34.6%) from end-October 2024 (EUR 13,096.3 million, 12.5% of GDP). It accounted for the largest share (32.9%) in the external debt, at end-October 2025, compared with 27% in end-October 2024
The external liabilities of the central bank stood at EUR 1,999.6 million (1.8% of GDP), down by EUR 87.9 million (4.2%) from end-October 2024 (EUR 2,087.5 million, 2% of GDP).
The external liabilities of other banks and money market funds totalled EUR 7,548.7 million (6.7% of GDP), up by EUR 1,089 million (16.9%) from end-October 2024 (EUR 6,459.3 million, 6.2% of GDP).
Other sectors' external debt equalled EUR 13,198.9 million (11.8% of GDP), up by EUR 150.6 million (1.2%) from end-October 2024 (EUR 13,048.3 million, 12.5% of GDP).
The stock of intercompany lending amounted to EUR 13,178.8 million (11.7% of GDP) at end-October 2025, down by EUR 694.6 million (5%) from end-October 2024 (EUR 13,873.5 million, 13.2% of GDP).
