The Interior Ministry Thursday issued preventive tips to citizens in connection with the official introduction of the euro in Bulgaria on January 1, 2026. In a Facebook post, the Ministry advises citizens to exchange BGN for EUR only at banks or post offices, where the exchange is free of charge until the end of June 2026.

During this period, police officers will be assisted by the Gendarmerie in maintaining public order around post offices across the country.

Citizens are also advised to pay with a bank card in January 2026, when both the national currency and the euro will be in use.

To protect themselves from financial abuse, citizens are advised to deposit their funds in BGN into a bank account before January 1, 2026. That way, the funds will be exchanged automatically and for free at the official fixed rate of EUR 1 for BGN 1.95583.

In case of suspected fraud or other abuse, citizens should submit an alert via 112 or at the nearest police station.
