At Friday's Question Time, Finance Minister Temenuzhka Petkova said there is no problem with supplying banks and Bulgarian Posts with euro. Clear deadlines have been set within which banks may sell the starter packs and businesses may purchase euro.
Stoyan Taslakov MP of Vazrazhdane asked Petkova about the measures envisaged to ensure that businesses can operate after Bulgaria joins the eurozone on January 1, 2026, given their obligation to return change and conduct operations in euro.
Petkova said that, up to the date of the euro's introduction, credit institutions must organize the supply of retailers and Bulgarian Posts with euro banknotes, coins and starter packs of euro coins. She added that the institution responsible for ensuring compliance with the law is the Bulgarian National Bank.
The obligations of Bulgarian Posts are set out in the Introduction of the Euro in the Republic of Bulgaria Act, which limits BGN/EUR exchange by Bulgarian Posts only to settlements where no credit institution is represented.
In conclusion, Petkova assured the MPs that the entire process of enabling the purchase of euro banknotes and coins is proceeding as scheduled and there will be no problem for retailers to obtain the new currency. The organization and coordination of the practical preparations are managed by a Coordination Committee, supported by seven expert working groups.
