Bank loans to households in Bulgaria exceeding BGN 1 million rose by 63.3% year-on-year to a total of 472 loans at the end of the third quarter of this year, according to data from the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) released on Friday. For comparison, a year earlier the number of such loans stood at 289, or 183 fewer than the current figure. The total amount of household loans above this threshold reached BGN 727.5 million, marking an annual increase of 67.1%, or just over BGN 292 million.
Household loans ranging between BGN 500,000 and BGN 1 million also recorded a substantial annual increase — up by 69.7% to a total of 4,504 loans, while the total amount of loans in this range rose by 69.9% to BGN 2.88 billion at the end of September.
Loans to households in the BGN 250,000–500,000 range increased by nearly 53% year-on-year, reaching 26,720 loans as of the end of the third quarter. The total amount of these loans grew by 54.1% year-on-year to BGN 8.89 billion.
The most numerous loans in Bulgaria remain those for amounts up to BGN 1,000 – 1.14 million loans (a 3.7% decrease year-on-year), with a total amount of BGN 339.6 million (down 4.7% compared to the same period of the previous year).
The largest share of the total value of household loans in Bulgaria is held by loans ranging between BGN 100,000 and BGN 250,000, amounting to BGN 14.8 billion (up nearly 22% year-on-year). The number of loans in this category stood at 94,306, up 19.1% year-on-year.
Overall, household loans in Bulgaria increased by 1% year-on-year to 2.89 million loans, while their total amount rose by nearly 21% to BGN 53.67 billion at the end of September. In absolute terms, the number of loans increased by 28,256, and their total amount by BGN 9.28 billion over the year.
Household deposits exceeding BGN 1 million up by 24% year-on-year
The number of household bank deposits exceeding BGN 1 million rose by 24.2% year-on-year to 2,061 deposits as of the end of September 2025, BNB data show. Their total amount increased by nearly 18% to BGN 4.9 billion. In absolute terms, the number of such deposits grew by 402, while their total amount increased by BGN 741.5 million over the year.
The most numerous deposits in Bulgaria remain those for amounts up to BGN 1,000 – 4.63 million deposits (down 2% year-on-year), with a total amount of BGN 759.9 million (down 3% on an annual basis).
The largest share of the total value of household deposits is held by those ranging between BGN 50,000 and BGN 100,000, with a total amount of BGN 18.7 billion (up 16.5% year-on-year). These deposits numbered 270,453, an annual increase of 16.3%.
In total, household deposits in Bulgaria rose by 1.2% year-on-year to 9.03 million deposits, while their total amount increased by 13.1% to BGN 96.27 billion. In absolute terms, household bank deposits grew by 104,099 over the year, and their total amount increased by BGN 11.1 billion.
