“We must be patient in order to jointly expand our support, because this coalition is the only alternative to today’s political status quo,” said Atanas Atanassov, leader of Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB) and co-chair of Democratic Bulgaria (DB), in his opening remarks at the General Assembly of coalition partner Continue the Change (CC). CC convened a General Assembly in Sofia to elect new leadership and adopt a new political platform. The two-day meeting is taking place on Saturday and Sunday at the Inter Expo Center.

“I do not want to comment on the others who claim to be an alternative, because they all look east, while we must steadfastly work to steer Bulgaria toward the West,” he added.

Atanassov called on members to treat each other with respect and to engage in dialogue, so that through discussion they can formulate their goals and pursue them together, emphasizing that “unity makes strength”.

“Let us restore the Coalition Council so that we can make and pursue decisions together. Otherwise, those observing us will always look for cracks to drive wedges,” Atanassov warned.

Commenting on remarks by former prime minister Kiril Petkov at the start of the forum, Atanassov noted: “There is a tactic in politics where the old faces are expected to step aside and new ones to emerge, but without the old, it cannot work.”
