Migrant pressure along Bulgarian borders has substantially lessened in comparison to 2023 and 2024, Interior Minister Daniel Mitov said in Burgas on Monday. According to him, the weather has started to warm up which means that the attempts to illegally cross the border will go up.
“The preparedness of Border Police is high. New equipment has been bought, a large part of it financed by EU programmes. The building of a radiolocation system has started,” Mitov said and added that the completion of the construction of the video surveillance systems at the state borders is underway.
“For us, in addition to local and mixed teams who patrol the Black Sea coast, fighting illegal migration is important. This directly affects the Burgas region. The idea that Europe must be seen as one, with common external borders, that are guarded by joint efforts, is somehow starting to shape up. Frontext has a contingent of about 160 officers along our border. Romania, Austria, Hungary have also sent such contingents. At the moment, we are making an effort to have more and more member states send their officers to the border, so that we can ensure its safety. The safety of our border secures the safety of the Schengen area as well,” the Interior Minister added.
Earlier on Monday, the head of the Border Police General Directorate, Anton Zlatanov, said in Pazardzhik that a total of 34 unmanned aerial vehicles will be deployed on May 13 to protect the State border. The new systems were purchased entirely with European funds.
