site.btaAt Discussion on Measures against Animal Cruelty, Justice Minister Highlights Role of Prevention and NGOs

During a roundtable on measures against animal cruelty taking place in Sofia, Justice Minister Georgi Georgiev highlighted the role of prevention and non-government organizations. "The problem cannot be solved with a single measure. It calls for work on prevention," he said at the forum, organized by MEP Emil Radev (EPP). 
 
The Justice Minister also said that the government reacted adequately and timely with its proposal for legislative changes on animal cruelty. He said that the proposal is not for "mechanical increase of sanctions but for an option to customize the punishment".

He also said that revisions to the Criminal Code won't end animal cruelty but will help the work of the law-enforcers, allow improving the training of officials and help create a general climate of zero tolerance in society and the competent institutions.
