Surgery in Bulgaria is at an exceptionally high level, especially in the area of pancreatic procedures, leading liver and pancreatic surgery, and liver transplant specialist Dr. Safi Dokmak told BTA. Dokmak took part in the 20th International Conference of the Bulgarian Association of Surgeons, Gastroenterologists and Oncologists, held under the motto "Hot Topics in Surgical Oncology and Gastroenterology". The event at the National Palace of Culture (NDK) congress centre in Sofia began on May 8 and concludes Saturday, May 10.
Dr. Dokmak, is this your first visit to Bulgaria?
"I am extremely pleased to be in Bulgaria. This is my second visit."
What are your impressions of Bulgarian medicine, especially in your field?
"Surgery in Bulgaria is at an exceptionally high level, especially when it comes to the pancreas. I have known my Bulgarian colleagues for a long time, and we often discuss new techniques and practices in surgery at conferences."
He cited innovations in minimally invasive surgical technology, including laparoscopy and robotics, as an example.
You mentioned robotics. What is your opinion on the emergence of new technologies such as robotics and artificial intelligence, particularly in your specialty?
"Robotics is a new technique that will increasingly assist in pancreatic surgery. It allows us to operate without large incisions. Robotics is easier to learn, since surgery requires precision, and it is easier for a surgeon to master it. This becomes very clear when we operate on patients. The techniques being developed are getting better and better. In the coming years, we will see many surgeries being led with the assistance of robotics. This is very exciting for surgeons trained to use these technologies."
What are your takeaways from the conference?
"This is an excellent conference because it manages to cover all the most important oncological diseases of the pancreas, liver, and many others that we had the chance to address. During the conference, we reviewed all the new techniques and new training programs in surgery. That is a very good thing. The event is of international level, as it managed to cover various areas of surgery comprehensively."
