"The Ministry of Education and Science, together with our Romanian colleagues, is embarking on a very important, conceptual project for the eventual transformation of our education system", said caretaker Education Minister Galin Tsokov on Thursday at a forum where a joint project between Bulgaria and Romania to modernize and adapt curricula in lines with the Education 5.0 initiative in the two countries was presented.

The project is implemented by the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) through the European Union's Technical Assistance Facility and in partnership with the European Commission's Directorate General for Reform. It will provide targeted support to both countries for developing resources to improve student outcomes and the quality of education.

"The step we are taking now is entirely aimed at the future of Bulgarian and Romanian education, and to achieve the goals of the project we need to build on our traditions and what we have achieved so far", Tsokov said, stressing that among the most important goals of the project is to structure the curricula in a new way based on the analysis of the respective education system.

Tsokov explained that curriculum approbation will be implemented especially "in one of the most crucial stages of learning in our education system - the lower secondary stage, grades five to seven".

He highlighted as important the aim to build networks of teachers who use new methods, approaches and resources related to the newly structured curricula.

"A very important advantage of the project is that it will unite the efforts of two neighbouring countries - Bulgaria and Romania, which have similar problems, including students' PISA results in recent years", Tsokov said.
