Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov presented the Student of the Year Award for 2023 to Sofia medical student Trifon Popov. The title is awarded every year by the National Representation of Student Councils and it was the 17th edition of the ceremony.

In his speech on the occasion, the Prime Minister spoke about the importance of being involved in extra-curricular activity - rather than just pass all your exams - to be a good student. He said half of the Council of Ministers were at the ceremony because they wanted to show their respect to students and their National Representation.

Trifon Popov is a five-year student and is a Eureka grantee and is actively involved in medical research.

At the ceremony were also Education Minister Galin Tzokov, Innovation Minister Milena Stoycheva, Electronic Governance Minister Alexander Yolovski, Environment Minister Julian Popov, Sports and Youth Minister Dimitar Iliev, Agriculture Minister Kiril Vatev, academic leaders and faculty, among others.

Lachezar Traykov, President of the Rectors' Council, received the award for contribution to the advancement of national student policies.

The mission of the award is to popularize and encourage accomplishments by Bulgarian students in all fields of higher education.

The winners in 15 categories are chosen by a 22-strong jury.

This year's edition received 163 nominations from 35 higher education establishments.
