The government Thursday approved a project for the acquisition of Stryker combat vehicles for the Land Forces, the government information service said. The project is one of the Defence Ministry's priorities.

The aim is to achieve interoperability with the NATO Allies, to acquire and maintain capabilities for the country's defence independently, in a joint operation and in the collective defence system, as well as to participate in allied operations outside the country's territory.

The cabinet also proposed that the National Assembly repeal a June 8, 2018 resolution of Parliament on an Investment Expenditure Project for the Acquisition of Core Combat Equipment for Battalion-size Battlegroups within a Mechanized Brigade.

On September 15, Defence Minister Todor Tagarev said the Ministry's efforts had been focused on the development of a modern defence and protection of the Bulgarian national interests against foreign encroachments. He said a draft contract for the acquisition of a total of 198 Stryker armoured vehicles and maintenance vehicles was being prepared for the needs of the Land Forces Mechanized Brigade. The evaluation and ranking of tenders for three-coordinate radars for the air and missile defence system is being carried out and a contractor for the project is to be selected.
