Caretaker Justice Minister Andrey Yankulov said that when possible, the leadership of the Justice Ministry plans to attend the sessions of the chambers of the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC), and that he will chair the sessions of the Plenum, the Ministry of Justice said on its website on Tuesday.
Yankulov was expected to take part in a session of the Judges Chamber of the Supreme Judicial Council. However, the meeting did not take place due to a lack of quorum.
“I am here for two reasons. The first is to demonstrate institutional respect on the part of the government toward the judiciary, and in particular toward the judicial community. The second is an expression of the policy I intend to pursue during the short tenure assigned to us, namely, closer interaction with the judicial system and more active exercise of the powers of the Minister of Justice,” the minister told the present members. He was invited to speak by Supreme Court of Cassation President and chair of the chamber Galina Zaharieva.
A meeting of the Prosecutors Chamber of the Supreme Judicial Council is scheduled for Wednesday, while on Thursday, February 26, a Plenum of the SJC has been convened by Minister Yankulov with a single item on the agenda - the appointment of an acting Chief Prosecutor.
