In a congratulatory message to members of the Association of Bulgarian Schools Abroad (ABSA) on International Mother Language Day, caretaker Education and Science Minister Sergei Ignatov said that mother tongue is the foundation of cultural memory and personal identity.
History, values, and a sense of belonging are passed on through the mother language, he wrote on Facebook.
“On the occasion of ABSA’s celebration and International Mother Language Day, I address you with sincere respect and gratitude. Your work has value that goes beyond the curriculum — it preserves the spiritual connection of children with Bulgaria and reinforces the authority of Bulgarian education worldwide,” Ignatov noted.
“Your dedication, professionalism, and perseverance turn Bulgarian schools abroad into lasting communities — places where knowledge goes hand in hand with upbringing, and tradition meets modernity. This is a contribution of long-term significance — for the children, for their families, and for Bulgarian culture beyond the country’s borders. Please accept my deep respect for everything you do,“ he said. “You carry a responsible mission and serve as an example of devotion to education and Bulgarian identity,” the Minister added.
Celebrated on February 21, International Mother Language Day has been observed throughout the world since 2000. This year's theme is Youth voices on multilingual education.
