Public sentiment suggests effective and personal participation by President Rumen Radev in the upcoming parliamentary elections, Rumen Petkov told journalists. Petkov is a member of the Coalition Council of BSP-United Left and leader of the Alternative for Bulgarian Revival (ABV).
"BSP-United Left has nominated him twice as a presidential candidate, and I believe Radev is a prominent representative of a potential partnership with the left," Petkov said. He added that the changes observed in BSP’s conduct in recent weeks are significant and point in that direction.
Petkov also commented that, in order to protect their party interests, GERB and its leader Boyko Borissov have thrown the country into chaos and an election campaign. "It is no coincidence that Borissov has repeatedly stressed that he will safeguard his party and its interests, without once speaking about the interests of society," the ABV leader said.
He noted that within the framework of the current government, BSP-United Left has made a serious compromise with its party interests in the name of the national and public interest. "We decided to participate in this government with the clear understanding that we, as a left-wing social coalition, would bear the greatest compromise and the heaviest damage," Petkov explained. He added that the processes of consolidation on the left are irreversible and that any attempt to undermine them would be a grave mistake. According to him, BSP ministers in the government have achieved substantial and visible results.
Regarding the upcoming elections, Petkov said that maintaining a system of combined paper and machine voting guarantees citizens the opportunity to exercise their choice. He argued that in recent years there has been a practice of amending the Election Code at the last minute, which, in his view, leads to a lack of preparedness among election commissions.
