Pleven residents protested Tuesday for justice in the case over the car accident that killed 12-year-old Siyana Popova on March 31. The protesters gathered in front of the city's courthouse before the fifth court hearing in the case was opened.
Siyana Popova died after a collision between a freight truck and the car she was travelling in. The driver - her grandfather - was injured in the accident.
The victim's father, Nikolay Popov, told journalists that he will file a report with the Prosecutor General about the disappearance of the truck's cargo. "I have been talking about this cargo for six months and no one is interested in how it disappeared and why it disappeared," he said. He added that he will also file a report about the expert's assessment on the case, Prof. Stanimir Karapetkov.
The protest was supported by the parents of 14-year-old Filip Arsov, who died in an accident on a pedestrian crossing in Sofia in September 2023. "For me, it is not normal that our children are being killed in this way. I have always asked myself why and who allows it. Article 28 of the Constitution states that everyone has the right to life, and encroachment on human life is punished as the most severe crime," said the boy's father, Krasimir Arsov. "We give these people the right to kill because we are silent. Because today [Tuesday], instead of being 100 people here, there should be 50,000 of us, which would make them think twice," he stressed, pointing out that corrupt and unprofessional authorities facilitate such accidents.
