The Sofia Regional Court (SRC) on Tuesday acquitted MP Lena Borislavova of charges that she knowingly used private documents falsely presented as signed by members of an association in May 2021. The ruling is subject to appeal.

According to the prosecution, the documents were made to appear as if they were signed by members of the Save Koral environmental organization. This allegedly enabled Borislavova to email false information to the Registry Agency concerning the discharge of Kiril Petkov from the Governing Board of Save Koral. Petkov is former prime minister and former co-leader of Continue the Change, now an opposition party within the CC-DB coalition.

Save Koral is a not-for-profit organization campaigning for the protection of Beach Koral on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast.

Before Tuesday's acquittal, Borislavova told the court that membership of the organization does not confer any status of power or financial control. Members contribute mainly their human energy and labour. According to the statute of the organization, a unilateral declaration is enough to terminate one's membership; there is no voting requirement. Therefore, no conceivable reason exists to forge a document about anyone's discharge from Save Koral.
