National Assembly Chair Raya Nazaryan met with European Commissioner for Economy and Productivity Valdis Dombrovskis here on Tuesday, the Parliament's press centre reported. She said Bulgaria will continue to work intensively to ensure a smooth, transparent, and successful transition to the euro currency. The meeting was also attended by National Assembly Deputy Chair Kostadin Angelov.

Nazaryan expressed gratitude to the European Commission and to Commissioner Dombrovskis for their invaluable assistance and good cooperation throughout Bulgaria’s euro area accession process.

The National Assembly has adopted all the necessary legislative acts and decisions for the introduction of the single European currency, Raya Nazaryan underlined. She specified that this was done with the support of every MP who believes in a united and strong Europe and in Bulgaria’s future within it. Efforts are being made to conduct a wide-scale information campaign regarding the transition to the euro, with special attention paid to elderly citizens to ensure they are prepared for a smooth change, the National Assembly Chair added.

In recent months, Bulgaria has achieved the necessary progress within an exceptionally short period in implementing the measures under the Recovery and Resilience Plan, renegotiating some of them with the assistance of the European Commission, and submitting in July 2025 the request for the plan’s second payment, Nazaryan emphasised. “We are ready with the reforms and measures for the third payment, and next week we will adopt at second reading three more bills which will meet all the requirements for it,” she specified.

Commissioner Dombrovskis noted that during his visit to Sofia he received assurances from the Bulgarian Government and the Bulgarian National Bank that everything is proceeding according to plan, and confirmed that the European Commission stands ready to assist the country in ensuring a smooth transition to the euro. He said the important benefits that the euro will bring to the country and the opportunities to make use of them should be highlighted. Bulgaria has achieved very good results regarding its fiscal framework, he pointed out. At present, great emphasis is being placed on implementing investments under the Recovery and Resilience Plan, Dombrovskis added, noting that the second payment request is being processed and that within the next few days there will be readiness to finance it at least partially.
