A total of EUR 159,480 in undeclared cash was intercepted in two separate smuggling attempts at the Kapitan Andreevo border checkpoint, the Customs Agency’s unit in Svilengrad said in a press release on Friday.
On September 22, customs inspectors found EUR 109,480 hidden in a vehicle. The driver, a Turkish national, declared that he was transporting consolidated cargo from Germany through Bulgaria and Turkiye to Jordan. The banknotes were discovered concealed behind the upholstery of the rear wall in the driver’s cabin.
In another case on September 17, customs officials uncovered EUR 50,000 hidden inside a mattress in the driver’s cabin of a truck with Turkish licence plates. The vehicle was carrying goods from France through Bulgaria and Turkiye to Georgia.
