The bilateral trade between Bulgaria and Turkiye has exceeded USD 7 billion, and Turkiye would like to achieve the goal of USD 10 billion as soon as possible, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan told reporters here on Tuesday. He is paying a visit to Bulgaria at the invitation of Foreign Minister Mariya Gabriel.

Nowadays, more than ever, reasonable policies are needed that prioritize security and stability in this region, Fidan said. As countries in the region, Bulgaria and Turkiye should deepen and strengthen their cooperation, he added. Tuesday’s meetings discussed the bilateral relations. “We would like to hold a sitting of the Cooperation Council at high level,” he also said.

Also discussed was the war in Ukraine. The Turkish side expressed satisfaction with the establishment of the Mine Counter-measures Task Group Black Sea (MCM Black Sea). “We will continue to apply the Montreux Convention strictly ,” Fidan said.

Turkiye’s almost entire export for Europe is carried out by land through Bulgaria, therefore Turkiye is in constant contact with the Bulgarian authorities to ease the border crossing of heavy duty trucks. The topic was discussed on Tuesday, Fidan went on to say. Bulgaria is also a main route for Turkish citizens living in Europe, he added.

“At a time when we face challenges such as terrorism and illegal migration, all our institutions cooperate with their Bulgarian counterparts. The Muslim population in Bulgaria is another dimension of our ties,” the Turkish Foreign Minister noted.

In his words, Turkiye attaches great importance to the restoration and revival of its cultural heritage in Bulgaria in a way that corresponds to the spirit of the bilateral cooperation.
