Central Election Commission Chair Kamelia Neykova told a briefing on Friday that CEC is actively preparing for the April 19 parliamentary elections, with an information campaign set to launch in the coming days. Neykova discussed the preparations with caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov, who also attended the briefing.
Neykova said: "Hopefully, voter turnout will be higher this time. We will make efforts to include more formats and activities in the information campaign and to reach a wider audience on social media, as young voters in particular are active there."
More information on the training plan for constituency and section election commissions is expected next week.
CEC is also preparing for both a larger and a smaller number of voting sections abroad, Neykova said. Voting outside the country has taken many forms. Should the number of sections be reduced, CEC and the Foreign Ministry will do their best to organize the vote in a way that avoids chaos. This will primarily affect three countries: Turkiye, the US and the UK, she said.
On February 11, President Iliana Iotova vetoed Election Code amendments that limit to 20 the number of voting sections in any non-EU country, not counting the voting sections at Bulgarian embassies and consulates. The veto is yet to be put to the vote in Parliament.
Video surveillance is the responsibility of the executive, but it will most likely be conducted in the same manner as before, Neykova said. Video surveillance takes place after the end of voting, during the ballot count and the completion of tally sheets. She urged members of section election commissions to follow the instructions carefully and not to neglect switching on the video monitoring devices.
The Council of Ministers is most likely to approve the budget estimate for the elections early next week, Neykova said.
On Thursday, CEC adopted a timeline for the preparation for the April 19 elections.
