Turkiye has promulgated a law in its State Gazette that makes taximeters and payment terminals in taxis mandatory, Turkish state television TRT Haber reported.

According to the law, taxi drivers will no longer be able to refuse payment with a debit card since payment terminals will be connected to the taximeter, which will automatically generate a receipt.

Taxi drivers or companies have a 15-day period to conclude a contract with a servicing bank for card payments. This period begins upon installation of the taximeter, which can be used after inspection by the regulatory authorities and certification that the device is reading correctly.

From September 1, 2026, all taxis must meet the new requirements.
