site.btaThousands of Romanians Rally Again Against Corruption in Judiciary
A protest march, mottoed “Together for Justice”, took place on Sunday evening in Bucharest. Despite near-freezing temperatures, thousands of people joined the demonstration, which began at 5 pm (Bulgarian time) in the centre of the Romanian capital and later moved to Victory Square in front of the government buildings.
Police presence was increased, and media interest was enormous, a BTA reporter observed firsthand. People of all ages took part in the march. Children were also present, captured by photographers and camera crews while playing under two large flags – those of Romania and the European Union.
Similar protests were held in Timisoara, Cluj, Iasi, Oradea, Brasov, Constanta, and Milan.
This marks the fifth consecutive evening that people in Bucharest have taken to the streets to support the independence of the judiciary. Protesters are demanding the resignations of Lia Savonea, head of the Supreme Court of Cassation, the leadership of the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA), Interior Minister Catalin Predoiu, and Justice Minister Radu Marinescu. They are also calling for legislative changes to close loopholes that allow the postponement of trials until the statute of limitations expires.
The wave of discontent began on Wednesday, December 10, following an investigation by the news website Recorder, in which several former and current magistrates spoke about pressure on the judicial system that led to the postponement of major corruption cases.
Meanwhile, more than 150,000 people have signed an online petition, calling for changes to the justice laws.
