Bulgaria’s bilateral relations with Germany are excellent, and Germany remains one of the country’s closest strategic partners, Bulgarian Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev said on Monday following his meeting with Johann Wadephul, his German counterpart, who is on an official visit to Bulgaria.

Georgiev said that the visit reflects the close ties between the two countries and added that talks were also held with GERB Chair Boyko Borissov. “The demonstration of parliamentary support for the joint efforts of our two governments proves that there are strong bonds between Bulgaria and Germany – bonds that, in times of conflict such as the war in Ukraine, Russian aggression, and the recent hostilities in the Middle East, remain steadfast as our nations look in the same direction,” Georgiev said.

The Bulgarian Foreign Minister emphasized that the talks covered cooperation in the fields of economy, defence industry, shared security and defence policy, partnership within NATO and the EU, the cessation of the war in Ukraine, and the continuation of support for the country. Georgiev specified that discussions also focused on the project for the establishment of a joint European air and missile defence system, which, he said, enjoys Bulgaria’s full support.

The minister added that Bulgaria seeks to draw greater attention to the Black Sea region and its security. “An important aspect of our cooperation in the areas of security and defence is our partnership with the German company Rheinmetall, which, together with the VMZ Sopot plant, is expected to begin construction of two factories in Bulgaria. This marks a significant stage in the development of our bilateral economic, trade, and security relations,” Georgiev stressed.

He assured that Bulgaria is a reliable partner in the field of security, noting that the country’s commitment has ensured that assistance to Ukraine remains substantial. “At the same time, we must not forget that Bulgaria is making consistent efforts to modernize its armed forces,” Georgiev added.
