There is no alternative to this Government, Deputy Prime Minister and BSP - United Left leader Atanas Zafirov said at the 16th Congress of the Bulgarian Social Democracy - Euroleft party here on Saturday. Without the Government, the country would be engulfed in chaos, lawlessness, stagnation, and political turmoil, he added. "This governance is not easy, but it works because its participants have given way to statehood and statesmanship, leaving their narrow party interests behind," he argued.
Zafirov highlighted the role of the Left-wing coalition in governing the country. In his words, two years ago, a left-wing coalition would have been impossible. The unification of Left-wing parties has restored the Left to a position of significance in the country's political life. "Now we must find a way for the Left to unite in all municipalities," Zafirov said. He gave as an example of this unity the candidate list of the BSP - United Left coalition for the municipal council elections in Pazardzhik.
Bulgarian Social Democracy - Euroleft leader Alexander Tomov said his party remains loyal to the BSP - United Left coalition. "In Atanas Zafirov and the new leadership of the Bulgarian Socialist Party, we see not only an outstretched hand, but a completely different political thesis - that unity on the Left, and in Bulgaria in general, is a fundamental political paradigm," Tomov noted.
According to Tomov, next year's presidential elections are of paramount importance. Given the high significance of the presidential elections, the party proposed to its coalition partners from the BSP - United Left coalition to hold preliminary presidential elections in the spring of 2026.
