The Vazrazhdane party issued a declaration on the commemoration of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, January 27. Speaking in Parliament here on Wednesday, party leader Kostadin Kostadinov highlighted examples of silenced memory and contemporary Nazism, emphasizing that crimes against the people and humanity have no statute of limitations.
“Twice in history, someone has tried to unite Europe after the collapse of the great empires of the past. The first time was Napoleon, who marched to Moscow and lost his teeth there,” Kostadinov commented. “The second time someone tried to unite Europe was Hitler,” he added.
“Now the third attempt comes from the neo-Nazis of the European Commission and their supporters here in Bulgaria, who have, by the way, openly spoken since last Sunday about destroying Bulgarian statehood, claiming they want Bulgaria to become part of a European federation,” said the Vazrazhdane leader. According to him, this constitutes treason, an example of neo-Nazism in action, and anti-Bulgarian sentiment.
“This is an example of behavior that must be condemned, this is an example of behavior that must be punished, because crimes against the people, against humanity, have no statute of limitations,” Kostadinov said. “And this represents a crime against an entire nation, against the Bulgarian people. I accuse the perpetrators in this hall who are carrying out these actions. I accuse everyone who supports this anti-Bulgarian idea,” he added.
Kostadinov also noted that in Sofia, a monument to the army that liberated Auschwitz [referring to the Red Army monument in Sofia, which was partially dismantled], dedicated to the people who, in his words, saved the Jews from total annihilation, had been dismantled. He claimed that “the neo-Nazis from Democratic Bulgaria” had created a symbolic cake using parts of the Soviet Army monument, including small figurines of children.
National Assembly Chair Raya Nazaryan imposed a formal reprimand on Kostadinov at the end of his speech, citing that he had addressed MPs twice with offensive and slanderous language.
