Most fruits, vegetables and staple food products have gone up in price on Bulgaria’s wholesale markets this week, according to data from the State Commission on Commodity Exchanges and Wholesale Markets released on Sunday.

The Wholesale Price Index, which tracks the movement of wholesale food prices in Bulgaria, increased by 1.63% to 2.429 points from 2.390 points a week earlier. The base level of the index (1.000 points) dates back to 2005.

Among vegetables, the sharpest price increase was recorded for courgettes, up 19.17% to EUR 1.43 per kilogram. Prices also rose for tomatoes, by 8.33% to EUR 1.82 per kilogram, cabbage by 6.34% to EUR 0.42, red peppers by 4.11% to EUR 1.40, and carrots by 1.01% to EUR 0.55.

A significant drop was registered in cucumber prices, down 13.03% to EUR 2.15 per kilogram. Lower prices were also reported for mature onions, down 7.6% to EUR 0.45, potatoes, down 6.46% to EUR 0.44, and green peppers, down 6.05% to EUR 1.10.

Among fruits, apples rose by 8.11% to EUR 1.20 per kilogram, lemons by 6.48% to EUR 1.64, oranges by 5.17% to EUR 1.22, and bananas by 4.29% to EUR 1.46 . The only fruit to record a price decrease were mandarins, down 1.63% to EUR 1.21.

The price of cow’s milk cheese edged up by 0.08% to EUR 6.02, while Vitosha-type yellow cheese fell by 0.55% to EUR 9.37. Yoghurt (3% and over fat content) rose by 4.59% to EUR 0.75 for a 400-gram cup, and fresh milk increased by 1.19% to EUR 1.19 per litre. Cow’s butter (125-gram pack) also became more expensive, up 0.63% to EUR 1.55 per pack.

Frozen chicken meat fell by 0.4% to EUR 3.51 per kilogram, while eggs (size M) increased by 2.45% and are traded at EUR 0.22 per piece wholesale.

Rice and mature beans rose by 1.08% to EUR 1.73 and EUR 2.15 per kilogram respectively. Lentils also went up by 2.6% to EUR 2.16 , type 500 flour by 5.44% to EUR 0.81, and sunflower oil by 0.83% to EUR 1.70 per litre. Sugar fell by 1.25% to EUR 0.90 per kilogram.
