The Izgrev folklore ensemble from Warsaw will present a choreography called Tease on the Square at the 11th Expats Join Hands in Worldwide Dance travelling folklore festival, which will take place from May 15 to 17 at BMW Park in Munich, Germany.
"We are trying to recreate and preserve the authenticity of our folklore and that is why our choreography is based on original people from the Thracian folklore region and more precisely from the vicinity of the village of Bezmer in Yambol Region," ensemble coordinator Minko Bebevski told BTA.
The Polish-Bulgarian Izgrev folklore ensemble is a formation dedicated to the preservation, presentation and popularization of Bulgarian folk dances and folklore culture in Poland. The ensemble includes dancers who have been actively engaged in Bulgarian folk dances for years and participate in various cultural initiatives aimed at presenting Bulgarian cultural heritage to an international audience.
Bebevski pointed out that at the invitation of the Bulgarian Embassy and the Bulgarian Cultural Institute in Poland, the ensemble have another planned exhibition at this year’s 10th My Bulgarian Journey photography competition, as well as the Bulgaria in the Eyes of Poles exhibition, which will be held on April 1 in Warsaw.
The folklore ensemble has also represented Bulgarian folklore at international folklore festivals in the Czech Republic, Spain and France. Its distinctive feature is the authentic and colorful folk costumes from Thrace, combined with the cheerful Bulgarian folklore music and the rich variety of traditional folk dances. "We have managed to attract new sponsors recently and so for the festival in Munich we will change into new costumes," Bebevski said.
The Expats Join Hands in Worldwide Dance travelling festival is organized by and for amateur folklore ensembles performing outside Bulgaria. The initiative was launched by the Ot Izvora group in Lyon, France, which hosted both the first edition in 2015 and the tenth edition in 2025. More than 100 dance ensembles and over 4,000 guests are expected at the 11th edition in Munich in May. The Bulgarian News Agency is the official media partner of the event and will present all participants.
