Reducing mortality, improving conditions for young families, and strengthening education were highlighted as key solutions to Bulgaria’s demographic crisis during the "Demography: A National Cause" panel at the second Bulgaria Across Five Oceans career forum at Inter Expo Center in Sofia on Saturday. The event is organized by the Bulgaria Wants You platform. The discussion was moderated by Andrey Arnaudov and Daniella Staridolska from the Movement for a National Cause NGO.
Former men's national volleyball team captain Vladimir Nikolov stressed high mortality among working-age people, noting nearly 100,000 deaths in 2025, with about 25% in working age from largely preventable diseases. He pointed out that Bulgaria must reduce mortality and encourage young people to stay or return from abroad.
Constitutional Judge Prof. Atanas Semov argued that Bulgaria is among the fastest declining populations globally, pointing to healthcare and education problems as major drivers.
HR expert Milen Velikov called for long-term, data-driven demographic policies and emphasized that the real issue is not free kindergartens but sufficient childcare places, especially in big cities. He noted growing employer flexibility for parents, though remarked how they remain uneven in different regions of Bulgaria.
The event again brings together Bulgarians from the country and abroad, leading companies, visionaries and opinion leaders to present real opportunities for building a career and a life in Bulgaria, the platform told BTA earlier.
BTA is hosting its own booth at the career forum for the second year running. This year, BTA will spotlight BTA School, its internship and career development unit.
The media partners of Bulgaria Across Five Oceans are Nova Broadcasting Group, Darik Radio and BTA.
