Bulgaria and Vietnam Thursday signed a declaration on promoting the bilateral relations to the level of strategic partnership. The document was adopted during a visit of General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam To Lam to Bulgaria at President Rumen Radev's invitation.

At a joint news briefing with the guest after a meeting of the two countries' delegations, Radev said that the declaration gives new momentum to the bilateral ties. According to Radev, this is an act that crowns the joint efforts of the two countries over decades to deepen and expand fruitful cooperation.

President Radev said that during his visit to Vietnam at the end of 2024, he and To Lam set specific steps that are now concrete terms in the documents adopted and signed on Thursday.

"This year marks the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. For us, Vietnam is not only an important, priority partner in the Southeast Asian region, but also a country with which we have strong historical ties of long-standing friendship, mutual assistance, and respect. The solid foundation of our relations is largely due to the contribution of the more than 30,000 Vietnamese citizens who, decades ago, received education, professional qualifications, and the opportunity to work in Bulgaria. They continue to be a stable and strong bridge between our countries and peoples," the President commented.

There has been steady growth in the bilateral trade and economic relations, but there is also enormous potential that is yet to be exploited, Radev said. The head of State noted "the impressive development of Vietnam." Extremely effective reforms for accelerated socio-economic development have resulted in sustained high economic growth for more than a decade. Last year alone, it was 8%, the President said.

Bulgaria is establishing itself as an innovation hub in Southeast Europe and offers competitive advantages in a number of areas that are of particular interest to  Vietnam - innovation, artificial intelligence, high technology, Radev went on to say. The sides share the conviction that there is enormous potential for deepening their relations in the field of security and the defence industry, it also transpired from his words. He recalled that cadets from Vietnam are training at the Georgi Benkovski Air Force Academy in Dolna Mitropoliya (Northern Bulgaria).
