President Rumen Radev emphasized Bulgaria’s significant contribution to the defeat of Nazi Germany, stating that the country paid a heavy price with thousands of lives. He made the remarks while speaking to journalists in Vukovar, Croatia, during his official visit.
The Bulgarian head of state visited the Bulgarian Military Cemetery in Vukovar, where he paid tribute to the Bulgarian officers and soldiers who died during the final phase of World War II. He also laid flowers at the Vukovar Memorial Cemetery, dedicated to those who died in Croatia’s Homeland War.
In memory of the Bulgarians who gave their lives in the Slavonia region during the closing stages of World War Two, a military memorial and an ossuary were built near Vukovar in 1965, where 1,027 officers and soldiers of the First Bulgarian Army are buried.
“This is my second official visit to Croatia and my first to Vukovar,” said President Radev. “As President of Bulgaria, it was my duty to honor the memory of those who fell both Bulgarians and Croats.”
“It was also my duty to pay tribute to the victims of Croatia’s Homeland War, who bravely defended the lives, freedom, and dignity of their fellow citizens,” Radev added.
“This monument stands as a reminder that there is no such thing as a good war,” said President Rumen Radev during his visit to Vukovar, Croatia. “Unfortunately, wars still continue, claiming the lives of innocent civilians - women and children.”
The President expressed his gratitude to the Croatian authorities for maintaining both memorial sites in excellent condition.
“We must remember. It is memory of such events that can help us prevent future wars—though, as we can see today, that remains extremely difficult,” Radev stated.
President Radev is currently on an official two-day visit to Croatia.
