The war in Ukraine and the future of key industries were among the key topics discussed by former US government officials on Friday at a forum in Sofia organized by the EuroAtlantic Institute.
James O’Brien, former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, said that the prosperity of the next generation will depend on four key sectors: defense, artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies, medicine, and energy. O’Brien noted that the defense sector can be not only a driver of innovation but also a source of disruptive capabilities. He highlighted the growing importance of AI and the digital sector across all industries.
James Rubin, former US Special Envoy and Coordinator of the State Department’s Global Engagement Center, said that there is nothing more important in the world at that moment than the war in Ukraine. He described Moscow as the engine of the war, noting that Russia had made the decision to invade and to prolong the conflict indefinitely.
Rubin added that US President Donald Trump is beginning to realize that ending the war is not as easy as he once claimed. He doesn’t have the influence he thinks he has with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin, Rubin said. Trump cannot persuade Putin to change his policies because Putin’s entire political career depends on the success of the war in Ukraine, Rubin said.
Rubin argued that the war would drag on for a very long time unless either President Trump changes his views and offers full support to Ukraine or there is a shift in Moscow’s views.
