Information meetings, part of the nationwide information campaign on the introduction of the euro in Bulgaria, took place on Tuesday in the towns of Samokov, Malko Tarnovo, Bregovo, Velingrad, and Pavel Banya. Four ministers took part in the meeting in Veliko Tarnovo.
Finance Minister Temenuzhka Petkova said that Bulgaria’s eurozone membership will bring economic and price stability, eliminate currency conversion costs, and foster more investments, businesses, jobs, and, consequently, higher incomes for Bulgarian citizens. She added that the Government’s main priority is to ensure that the transition to the single European currency is smooth and fair.
Tourism Minister Miroslav Borshosh said that the Eurozone will not magically improve country's tourism, but it will emphasize its advantages. "Business communication will be much easier when conducted in a single currency for the largest economies," he highlighted. According to Borshosh, tourism is often highlighted as an example of the Eurozone’s benefits, though other sectors also stand to gain.
Defence Minister Atanas Zapryanov noted that Bulgarian companies will benefit from easier defence trade as part of the euro area. He added that euro area membership will also bring greater resilience against hybrid threats, adding that this is part of economic security, which is closely linked to national defence. Zapryanov explained that euro area accession means deeper economic and political integration within the EU, as well as opportunities for joint arms procurement and industrial cooperation.
Minister of Electronic Governance Valentin Mundrov said the euro adoption will eliminate risks and strengthen confidence in this country as a secure and modern economic environment. The adoption of the euro is a strong impetus for the digitalisation of the country. The single European currency will facilitate Bulgaria's integration into a digital market, provide new opportunities for innovation and create a predictable business environment, he argued.
The aim of the campaign is to provide citizens with clear, detailed and reliable information on the main stages and deadlines of the euro introduction process.
The euro information meetings are a joint effort between the responsible institutions, including the Ministry of Finance, the Bulgarian National Bank, the Ministry of Economy and Industry, the Consumer Protection Commission (CPC), the National Revenue Agency, the Financial Supervision Commission, the National Social Security Institute, among others.
The nationwide information campaign was launched in Burgas (on the Black Sea) on September 2. Bulgaria is set to adopt the euro as of January 1, 2026, becoming the 21st member of the euro area.
